PAT SHEETS
I am a native West Virginian. I graduated from Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore, MD as a science major. I earned a Doctor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health. I have taught science courses at the University of Charleston, Charleston WV, Marshall University, Huntington, WV, and East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN.
There are many artists in my family, from Great Uncles I have never met to Aunts and Uncles with whom I have painted. I feel so privileged to be carrying on a family talent tradition.
God's beautiful earth is my inspiration, as I drive through the countryside I am constantly inspired to paint. I like watercolors because they are very neat and clean to use, and very portable, and watercolor medium allows for instant gratification. The small size allows for a relatively swift capture of a scene when painting in the out of doors where the light and mood can quickly change. The benefit of original art is the unique experience of being able to share what I have captured of a summer scene that can then be viewed and remembered in the dead of winter. Original art is an adventure into another person's vision of the world. It is a method of communication, human to human, which can elicit many emotions from pleasure to sorrow. Owning the original work of art makes the experience from artist to patron more personal. A successful small painting can take several hours of intense work to produce.
My art works have been exhibited at the Jonesborough Historic Visitor Center, Le Petite Bistro in Cookeville, TN, and Sycamore State Historic Park in Elizabethton, TN. I have recently taken Watercolor classes at McKinney Art Center in Jonesborough, TN, and am a member of the Advisory Committee for the Center.
